Saltwater game fishing in Khao Lak, on the West Coast of the Andaman Sea in Southern Thailand, Fishing Advice Thailand has made an overview with link to the best Khao Lak fishing charters
When people refer to Khao Lak, they’re usually talking about a series of white-sand beaches hugging Phang-Nga’s west coastline, backed by forested hills, about 70 km north of Phuket. Khao Lak gives way to Nang Thong, making up a beach for those who shun the glitz and cheesiness of Phuket’s bigger resort towns, but still crave comfort, shops and plenty of facilities. Khao Lak proper (Khao Lak Town), is a jumble of restaurants, tourist markets and low-rise hotels. About 2.5km north is Bang Niang a quieter version of sandy bliss with skinnier beaches. Pakarang and Bang Sak, 12km to 13km north of Khao Lak, is a sleepy, unbroken sandy stretch.
There are no real big game boats in Khao Lak. The local saltwater fishing tours at Khao Lak typically consist of fishing trips from long-tail boat to the FAD (Fish Aggregating Devices). Made of local squid fisherman the first lines of FAD lie about 6 km. outside of Khao Lak and they are scattered all the way out to the Similan Islands. The FAD attract the smaller fish and provide shelter. The presence of the smaller fish attracts the larger fish such as Dorado, Wahoo, Giant Trevally, King Mackerel, Barracuda, Queen Fish, Sailfish, Cobia, and various tuna species.
At the FAD you can try fly fishing, popper fishing, fishing with jigs, spoons and diving lures, but the best method is fishing with live bait. There is also popper and fly fishing for Giant Trevally, Yellowfin Barracuda and Bluefin Trevally on the reef. The tides and conditions are important on these reef fishing trips. Note that fly fishing equipment may not always be provided, and you should therefore bring along your own equipment and flies. Most fishing charters only operate from November to April, due to weather conditions.
Thai fishing is a service that offers popper and jigging trips and light big game fishing tours, trolling and bait fishing to the FAD (Fish Aggregating Devices) Trips are done from private Thai long-tail boats and Speedboats.
